What’s in store for tomorrow’s Apple event? It’s possible only Steve Jobs and whoever does his Keynote presentations know for sure, but that’s not gonna stop us from making our bests guess. So get out those rumor checklists and see how yours matches up.

Peavey and Agile Partners have just introduced AmpKit and AmpKit LiNK, an iPhone-based hardware/app combo that takes portable guitar and bass effects to a new level. It’s loud, it’s lightweight, and it’s an extremely flexible (and relatively inexpensive) alternative to a floor full of pedals.
Matt Tinsley recently reviewed the iRig and AmpliTube combination that also became available recently. I pre-ordered the iRig, and I loved it from the moment I got it in the mail and plugged my guitar into it (I did unbox it first). I received a review unit of the AmpKit LiNK this month, though, and for the last couple of weeks, it’s been the mainstay of my practice sessions.
I’ll tell you up front that I’m not currently gigging, so I can’t attest to the road durability of this hardware, or the actual feasibility of using it onstage. I don’t doubt that it would perform well on both counts, but I haven’t battle-tested it. That being said, click “Read More” for my thoughts on the AmpKit/LiNK setup.

I’m not the most musically inclined person, but I do tend to try out a bunch of different music generating apps on both my iPhone and iPad. Sometimes the end result is more or less successful, while other times I may as well have been sitting in front of a Baby Grand with just my index fingers and the sheet music for Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor in front of me. The newly released Hexaphone from Impresario Digital, thankfully, fits the former quite well.
Hexaphone uses samples generated from an expensive Nord Lead 3 synthesizer to provide you with five different sound patches and eight different scales to use, as well as 17 percussion beats to accompany your music. You can lay down a drum beat, then record a bass line and play it back while you lay down another track, and then more upon that if you want.
What’s most interesting and different about this music app is how the keys are laid out, making it much easier to hit the intended notes on a smaller iPhone screen. The app works quite well on the iPad, though one optimized for the larger iPad screen would be most welcome. See the video on the next page.
My only gripe with the app so far is not being able to easily export recordings, though the developer says that’s coming in a future release. The developer’s website has lots of instructional videos for musical newbs like me, and they do a good job of showing you the capabilities of the app, before or after you buy. Squareball is a weird one; it’s probably best described as a platforming game, except that you move the platforms rather than the jumper. The main character is a little white ball (or square in this case — the game has a retro blocky pixel aesthetic) that constantly floats from top to bottom on the screen, and you can slide (or tilt, according to whatever option you choose) the actual stage around the ball, moving it through various nooks and crannies while trying to “collect” colored blocks.
The concept is tough to explain, but once you see it in action, you’ll understand right away. The goal is to move the stage at the right time in order to keep the ball bouncing around where you want it. It’s actually really fun, despite the simplicity, and over the 20 various stages, there are some pretty clever puzzles. The game also has OpenFeint integration, and the 8-bit music is pretty catchy as well.
It’s a good deal for only 99 cents. There’s also a lite version to try out if you just want to see how it works. I can’t see anyone really disliking the game, but it is fairly simple. Still, at just a buck, it’s worth a purchase just to have it to pick up and play when you need a mindless little reflex game.

Here’s a fun treat for your late night tonight — one of my favorite bands, Squeeze, made an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show the other night to play the classic “Pulling Mussels (From The Shell),” and the keyboardist was playing both the electronic ivories and an iPad. He even drops a nice solo in right around 2:32. YouTube commenter MooCowMusic says it’s his app, Pianist, and it looks about right.
At any rate, it sounds terrific, and how awesome is it that Squeeze is rocking the iPad in a live TV performance? I wonder if they’re including the instrument in their other live performances — or maybe even in actual recording. Very excellent.
